Why be the only mattress maker in Canada using hemp?

We have chosen to replace cotton with hemp in our fabrics. It hasn't been easy and has required some problem solving, but we are proud of the end result and think that our customers will sleep better on a product that lasts longer as a result of it. So why go through all the hassle to make a Canadian hemp mattress?

Hemp has the ability grow in colder climates (like here in Canada), requires a fraction of the pesticides of cotton to grow and produces yields many times greater per acre than cotton. Industrial applications of hemp include textiles, paper, nutrition, medicine and nutraceuticals, plastic composites and biofuels. currently you have to purchase hemp textiles that are processed overseas. In spite of this, we still believe that it is a better product for the earth than cotton due to the significantly less amount of water and pesticides used to produce much greater crop yields.

Currently, you have to purchase hemp textiles that are processed overseas. In spite of this, we still believe that it is a better product for the earth than cotton due to the significantly less amount of water and pesticides used to produce much greater crop yields. It is also our hope that by using the product for local manufacturing, that in a small way it helps to create a demand for Canadian textiles manufacturing again.

Aside from the sustainability benefits, there are performance benefits to hemp. We have chosen to use hemp instead of cotton because it is stronger, more durable, dryer, antimicrobial and more breathable than cotton. These reasons combined with the environmental impact led us to believe that it was the best choice to use for the layers that would be closest to our customer's skin.

Hemp is a crop that saw it's decline primarily for political reasons but has the potential to have an enormously positive impact on both the environment we live in and the goods we manufacture. Using hemp as a replacement for cotton in our mattresses is just one small step towards sustainability. We invite you to take that small step with us for your next mattress and bed frame purchase.
